The Hallway Moment We Miss
SPEAKER_00Sarah, your children's ministry pastor, just solved the problem that's been plaguing your children's ministry in your church for three months. And she did it quietly, without any drama, without asking for any credit. But you saw it happen and you thought, oh good, that's handled. And you kept walking right past her in the hallway. Three seconds. That's all it would have taken. But you were already mentally rehearsing the conflict you're about to step into. If this kind of scenario sounds familiar, I'm glad you're here. We're talking about it here on the Healthy Church Staff Podcast for today.
Why Micro Moments Build Culture
SPEAKER_00My name is Todd Rhodes. I'm one of the co-founders over chemistrystaffing.com. You don't have a staff culture problem because you're missing the big initiatives. You have a staff culture problem because you're missing the micro moments. Every single day, your staff does good work, they solve problems, they show up, they carry weight, and every single day you notice it briefly, and then you move on. And you think noticing is enough, but I'm here to tell you today it's not. Culture isn't built in an all-staff retreat. It's built in the hallway, it's built in your Slack thread. It's built in the 30 seconds after the meeting ends. That's where your real culture is built. But sometimes what happens is we
The Cost Of Unnoticed Work
SPEAKER_00skip those moments. And that is a big problem. Your staff starts to wonder if anybody really sees what they're doing. And again, they're not needy. They're just they're human. They're not asking for a parade or a hero sandwich. They're asking for confirmation that their effort is noticed and that it matters. And when you skip that three-second acknowledgement, three seconds. When you skip that, they start to fill in the blank. And the blank barely ever gets filled with he must think I'm doing a really great job. It gets filled with something more like, I guess that wasn't all that important, or maybe I'm not contributing like I thought I was contributing. And over time they just stop bringing you solutions. They stop going that extra mile. They stop solving things. Not because they're lazy, but they're because they're unreinforced. Now, I know you see the good work. I know that you're grateful. I know you're not trying to be a jerk.
Three Seconds And Ten Words
SPEAKER_00But you just need to stop sometimes. Maybe one time a day. That's it. Start there. And when you see somebody do something good, some good work, just stop. Three seconds, ten words. Hey, I saw what you did with that. That was solid. You just saved us hours. Thank you. Hey, you know what? That was the right call. Well done. You don't need to get out of pencil and paper and go to Chat GPT and write a whole formal recognition program. You don't need to schedule it. You just need to not walk past it. This isn't about being fake or over the top either. It's about naming what's true before you move on to what's broken. And so often as church leaders, we are so focused on what's broken that we don't take those three seconds to acknowledge what's been fixed. And here's why I think this matters more than what you know. Your staff is watching what you stop for. And if you only stop for problems and crises and complaints, that's the culture that you're building. A culture where the only way to get your attention is really to fail or to fight. But
What You Stop For Shapes Culture
SPEAKER_00think about this: if you stop for wins, even small ones, especially small ones, you're building something different. You're building a team that knows that good work gets noticed, that solutions matter more than conflict or drama. That contribution is valued, not just expected. Business leader Patrick Lancioni says the single greatest cause of job satisfaction is feeling irrelevant. And three seconds? Three seconds can eliminate that. You're not adding to your workload, you're just pausing in the work that you're already doing.
The Monday Challenge And Next Steps
SPEAKER_00So here's the bottom line for today. Staff culture isn't built in the big moments that you plan, it's built in the small moments that you notice. Three seconds could be the difference between a staff member who feels seen and one who's quietly disengaging. My guess at your church is that your team, for the most part, is doing really good work. You see it. All I'm asking you to do is, now that you've seen it, say something about it. That's the challenge for this Monday. I hope it's been helpful to you. My name is Todd, and I am one of the co-founders over at Chemistry Staffing.
