In this episode of the Healthy Church Staff Podcast, Todd Rhoades discusses the common issue of communication gaps between creative and strategic church staff members. He emphasizes the importance of understanding different brain types—creative versus strategic—and how they each contribute uniquely to church leadership. The episode outlines approaches to bridging these gaps, such as establishing a collaborative rhythm where creativity and strategy inform each other, fostering conversations about the 'why' before the 'what' in ministry planning, and embracing healthy tension to enhance teamwork and church health. • Common miscommunications between creative and strategic staff in church settings. • Understanding different brain types: creative vs. strategic. • Importance of discussing the 'why' before the 'what' in decision-making. • Fostering a collaborative environment where creativity and strategy complement each other. • Encouragement of healthy tension for better teamwork and church outcomes.

When Staff Meetings Go Quiet

SPEAKER_00

Tuesday morning, you're at your staff meeting, and your worship pastor just pitched an idea for Sunday. And you look at your senior pastor's face and it tells you everything. The room gets quiet, the worship pastor looks a little bit confused, maybe a little bit hurt, and the senior pastor feels like they're speaking different languages, and you're wondering why in the world does this keep happening. Does this sound familiar? Do you ever maybe it's not between your worship pastor and your senior pastor? Maybe it's between you and your discipleship pastor, or you and your children's pastor. I don't know. But you're it just seems like you're on different pages. And if that sounds familiar, that's what we're going to talk about today here on the

Creative Brain Versus Strategic Brain

SPEAKER_00

podcast. Hi there, my name's Todd Rhodes, one of the co-founders over chemistrystaffing.com. And you're listening to the Healthy Church Staff Podcast. We're going to talk today about the creative brain versus the strategic brain. All church staff are wired differently. We've talked about this a little bit before on the podcast, but everybody is sharp. Everybody is called by God, hopefully, on your team. And everybody has a different wiring that God has given them. Some of us are more creative, some of us are more strategic. Maybe your worship pastor thinks in moments and experiences, while your senior pastor thinks more in systems and outcomes. And I'm here to tell you right now that neither one is wrong, but they're solving completely different problems. The worship pastor asks, Will this move people closer to God? And the senior pastor is asking, Will this move the church forward? They're both looking at it from different angles and from different skill sets. Both questions matter,

How Drift Turns Into Tension

but they don't always have the same answer. And that's where it can get a little bit messy. Because if you're not careful, there could be a drift that happens over time. The drift that really a lot of people don't ever see coming. The worship pastor starts feeling micromanaged. Every creative idea gets filtered through budget spreadsheets. The senior pastor, on the other hand, starts feeling like creativity trumps wisdom. You know, I'm all about being creative, but we gotta be smart here. Every practical concern gets labeled as limiting the spirit, and soon you've got two leaders, two be leaders who are very sharp leaders, two leaders who both love Jesus, two leaders that both want the church to thrive, but you also have two leaders that can have a conversation without there being any tension. Listen, both roles are protecting absolutely something sacred. So we need to find the bridge that can hopefully change things, the bridge that might even actually change everything.

Build The Bridge With Why

SPEAKER_00

And that starts with talking about the why before you talk about the what. For the worship pastor, explain the heart behind the idea first. For the senior pastor, acknowledge the heart before you address the logistics. Create a rhythm where creativity and strategy inform each other. Don't make one subordinate to one of the other ones. Make them dance and partners instead. So when the worship pastor says, Hey, I want to try something different, the senior pastor hears, I want to help people encounter God in a fresh way. And on the other hand, when the senior pastor says, Hey, let's think through the details, the worship pastor should hear something like, I want to help you succeed. This isn't just about Sunday morning, it's about modeling collaborations for your entire team. Your congregation watches how you handle creative tension. Matter of fact, the rest of your staff watches how you handle creative tension. And they learn from how you blend both the vision and the wisdom together. And believe me, when you get this right, everything gets easier. So here's your bottom line for today.

Questions That Create Healthy Tension

SPEAKER_00

The best worship experiences happen when creativity and strategy stop competing and start collaborating. This week, I'd love for you to have one conversation about the why behind ministry and the why behind a ministry decision before you discuss the how. If you're the senior pastor, ask the worship pastor what they're hoping people will experience. If you're the worship pastor, ask the senior pastor what success looks like from a church health perspective. Because your team doesn't need to have perfect agreement. You're never going to have perfect agreement. But your team does need to have healthy tension that sharpens both creativity and wisdom.
