Welcome back to the Healthy Church Staff Podcast. Maybe I shouldn't say welcome back, maybe this is your first time. Welcome to the Healthy Church Staff Podcast. My name is Todd Rhodes, I'm your host. I'm also one of the co-founders over at chemistrystaffingcom, and today we're shifting our focus a little bit from the pulpit to the pews as we explore how to equip your church, your volunteers, your attenders, for everyday ministry.
Speaker 1:It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that ministry primarily happens within the four walls of the church building, but in truth, ministry is 24-7. It's a 24-7 calling and it's lived out in homes and workplaces and schools and neighborhoods. And as church leaders, it's actually our responsibility, if we're doing it right, to equip the attenders of our church to really be ministers in their everyday lives. It's about empowering them to share their faith and to serve others and to make a difference in the world around them. It's about evangelism, but it's also about discipleship and growing people and helping people take their next step with Jesus and their next step with each other. So studies have shown that churches that prioritize equipping their members for everyday ministry really tend to have a greater impact on their communities because when they do that, they start to foster a culture of discipleship where faith just isn't something you do on Sunday mornings, but it's something that you take with you outside the four walls of your church. It becomes a way of life. Theologian and author Dallas Willard once said the most important thing about discipleship is not the information that we possess, but the transformation that takes place in our character. In other words, it's not just about teaching people about Jesus, it's about helping them to become more like Jesus.
Speaker 1:So how can I encourage you and what advice would I give you today for helping to equip your church to be everyday ministers. It requires some intentionality and it requires some creativity, I should say. But let me give you a few tips. First of all, if you're a communicator, if you're someone that preaches and teaches regularly, preach and teach with a focus on application, not just sharing biblical knowledge, but challenge your congregation to apply it to their daily lives, much like what I try to do here on the podcast. Every day, I try to tell you hey, as you go through your day, think about this. I pray that God will bring things from this podcast into your mind and into your heart, that you can ruminate on what you've heard and make changes, even those small changes we talked about just a couple of days ago. Even those small changes, when implemented, make a huge difference over time. So preach and teach with a focus on application, to get the people in your church to apply it to their daily lives and not just absorb all of this biblical information and knowledge.
Speaker 1:And then, secondly, offer opportunities to serve. Provide a variety of ways for people to serve, both within the church and in the community. That could be through small group opportunities, where you create spaces where people can connect and grow in their faith and encourage one another. It could be by providing some resources and training, maybe some workshops or seminars or online resources that help equip people with the skills and the knowledge that they need to effectively minister to others. But make opportunities for service so that it's provide on-ramps for people to be able to get involved in taking what they're learning on Sunday morning and reaching people and ministering to people throughout the week. Just remember here's the bottom line for today your church isn't just a building, it's a community of people and those people should be called to minister to the world. So equip your congregation to help live out their faith beyond the Sunday mornings, and when you do that with some intentionality, you're going to be able to watch as they really transform their communities. You're going to see these life change stories happening and honestly, can I say this If we're doing it right, probably most of those life change stories are not happening within the four walls of your church. They're actually happening in the workplace and as people go to baseball games and coach people's kids and those kind of things. That's where really the relationships and a lot of the life change is going to happen.
